Schroder Ventures Life Sciences (SVLS) is a leading global investment group dedicated to the life sciences sector. At the end of May 2003, SVLS closed its International Life Sciences Fund III (ILSF III) with total commitments of $402 million, the largest amount raised in the sector to that point.
Objectives
- Northbank Communications (now College Hill, Life Sciences) was engaged to work with SVLS to develop the strategy for communicating the successful closing across all relevant media including:
- private equity, financial, business and sector press
- As SVLS is a trans-atlantic venture capital group, coverage in both Europe and USA was important
Our Approach
- Helped develop the key messages, contributing to both the press release drafting and the development of an agreed Q&A document
- Worked with SVLS to prepare a targeted media list of the UK, European and US national, financial and biotech trade media
- Used PR Newswire to increase media reach via wires and in the US
- Pre-briefed BioCentury and the Financial Times to ensure feature coverage on the day of the announcement on the back of interviews with Kate Bingham, General Partner at SVLS
- Followed up with key journalists to expand on the story and set up interviews with SVLS partners
Results
Working closely with the national, financial and biotech trade media resulted in extensive coverage on the day of the release or soon afterwards:
- Briefing of the Financial Times ensured an in depth article appeared on the day of the announcement
- Journals covering the news included the Financial Times, BioCentury, The Boston Globe, BioWorld Today/BioWorld International, Scrip, The Times, Investment Week, Financial News, The Daily Deal, Real Deals and Private Equity International
- The story also gained coverage on a wide range of newswires and websites including Dow Jones Business News, Bloomberg, Reuters, Yahoo Finance, Private Equity Online, BioSpace and BioPortfolio
The closing of the fund gained rapid recognition in the industry being subject of widespread discussion and comment, and contributed to the positive sentiment and continuing 'up-tick' in the sector.
